Vietnamese orphans
Sir, — To take on the I onerous responsibility of an underprivileged child from lan alien culture is rather a I high price to pay for a; '“status symbol.” To place.;' as M. J. Stevenson suggests, ‘ a war orphan alongside such ; materia) possessions as col-1 our television sets, two cars.;; boats and swimming pools, which many New Zealanders renjoy, is absurd. Whatever I the rights or wrongs of bringing Vietnamese orphans into this country, those people who are willing to open their homes to these unfortunate children are; (doing so out of genuine! ; compassion and not mat-' erialistic greed. However misguided their charity can i be argued to be, they are, at] least, prepared to give a loti .more of themselves than! just another cash donation. — Yours, etc., 1 B. M. BROOK.
