The method of water classification adopted by the Water Resources Council was supported by the president (Mr E. H. Simpson) at the annual conference of the Catchment Authorities’ Association at Matamata yesterday. The classifications, he said, were done in Wellington, and this ensured uniformity throughout the country. At ;once. the classifications became the responsibility of the catchment authorities,' and here, local knowledge could be of great value. The setting of a classification was not a panacea, he said, but was concerned with the control of polluting discharges so that the best possible multiple use of water could be fostered.
It had been suggested that water classifications should be done on town and countryplanning principles, with a specified use for each water, and specified departures instead of water rights.
This would be “a real winner for the legal profession.” said Mr Simpson, as well as frustrating, and tending to lower water standards.
