Recipe book for money-savers
A “Money-Saving Cook Book’’ sounds like a :well-meaning bore, full of half a dozen different ways lo serve hangers and mash. It isn’t. This hard-cover recipe I book from the Good Housekeeping Family Library may I not be for gourmet cooks,
ibut it has plenty of ideas! (for interesting dishes. ■ Many of the money-saving; jtricks are well known to; I cooks of the old-fashioned ■ I type. They are lessons that] ■ can be re-learnt or taught ■■ afresh to put some rein on' •rising food costs. The use of] i artificial sweetners as an' alternative to sugar is espeiciaily timely. i One of the basic principles; |is “make your own" rather: (than buy ready-made. That 'sounds like hard work, and isometimes it would be, but' it can be worth while, the • authors assure us. Some of the advice re-! quires rethinking of old; ■habits. There are suggested! 'menus that enable entire; ■meals to be cooked either in' ;the oven, or on top of the. ! stove — great for con-: serving energy. Soups can be made into a' meal on their own, and; !there are some delicious rec-' lipes. The cheaper varieties: of fish are just as nourishing as the more expensive, and. (can be even tastier, say the: authors. However, it is in this section that the main limitation of the book shows most; • markedly:' many of the fish; varieties’ are tried and true'. ■British favourites not readily, (available here. SUBSTITUTES New Zealand cooks acciis-i torned to thinking of meat! ;a.. a basic staple for the main meal may find food for thought in the mainly meatless section. Here vegetables., eggs, and cheese recipes are tasty, nourishing substitutes. ; There is a section on how to give ordinary ingredients! a lift by using herbs and' ■ spices. And for a touch of i class there is some excellent! ■ advice on an often neglected aspect of ‘cookery — the right garnishing.
