No quick decision on E.E.C. trade
(N.2.P.A. Staff Correspondent LONDON, April 8. The E.E.C. is unlikely to agree on new trading arrangements for New Zealand before the British referendum on continued market membership, . the British Prime Minister (Mr Harold Wilson) told the New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr Hugh Watt) when they met for 40 minutes in London last night. Mr Watt said today: “Mr Wilson is confident that the referendum will decide to stay in Europe.”
Mr Watt said that the British leader did not seem concerned that New Zealand would be unable to endorse new arrangements if they were not made final before the ballot.
“He felt that we had expressed ourselves adequately in generally welcoming the result of the E.E.C. summit in Dublin last month,” he said. Mr Watt, who arrived here only three weeks ago with . improved E.E.C. arrangements his main mission, said he had emphasised that New Zealand wanted fast progress on its case.
