Strong N.Z. team at judo

The world-rated New Zealand judo exponent, Rick Littlewood, will head a strong team at the Rothmans Oceania judo championships in Christchurch during the week-end.

New Zealand’s dominance of the championships was broken in Sydney last year by the Australians and the home judokas will be keen to re-establish themselves.

Four Australian state sides, eight New Zealand provincial teams and an entry from Fiji will compete in the championships. Littlewood put on an outstanding performance at the Munich Olympics, where he took the eventual gold medal winner, Sekine (Japan) the full distance before losing on a split decision. Australia’s finest judo exponent, Alex Bykerk, was only narrowly beaten by the Aucklander in the Sydney open final. Littlewood won both the middle-weight and open sections at the New Zealand championships during Easter.

Other top contenders for the open title include Ivor Endicott-Davies, who was defeated by Littlewood in the national open final, Hans Van Duyn, the heavy-weight champion, and the New Zealand representative, lan Staples.
