Work to stop erosion
Protection work and planting to stop erosion of farm- ' land on the Selwyn River, > near Chamberlain’s Ford will be recommended by the rivers control and drainage committee of the North Canterbury Catchment Board. The two 100-metre sections of anchored protection work and planting willow stakes would cost about 52300, the committee was told yesterday by the board’s deputy cnief engineer (Mr B. P. Dwyer). The committee also agreed on the need to spend about $BOOO to install a new, bigger culvert at the end of Wilson’s Drain, Kaiapoi. Land in the area, between; Flaxton Swamp and the Cam; River, drained slowly andii was suffering accordingly, [( the committee was told. i. Wilson’s Drain had sft! culverts under the Northern; Motorway — where there; was no restriction — but the culvert at the end of the drain, into the Cam River, was only 3ft sin, Mr Dwyer said. Correcting this would not be the complete answer to the problem, but it would help, Mr Dwyer said. i
