Ebert equals record

The Canterbury weight-lifter and Commonwealth Games champion, Tony Ebert, last evening equalled a Commonwealth record and qualified for the world championships in Moscow.

In a live performance as part of the first evening’s viewing from Television One, Ebert clean and jerked 167 kg, equalling the middle-weight mark of Ken Adams (Canada). It was the same weight Ebert lifted at the Hastings Highland Games, but which was not recognised as a record because of some technical irregularities. Immediately after Ebert, his commentator, the super heavy-weight champion, Graham May, clean and jerked 200 kg. This sterling performance was exposed for the spoof it was when the front-man, Dougal Stevenson, tickled May and took the bar from him.
