Pageant crowd sees fatal plunge

TIMARU, March 31.

A man was killed this morning when his Tiger Moth crashed into the ground at Waimate Airport during a combined air pageant and traction engine display.

He was Eric Raymond George (Jack) Hanlon, a structural engineer, of Cannington Road, Maori Hill, Dunedin. Mr Hanlon’s wife was among the large crowd, many of whom saw the accident. Mr Hanlon’s aircraft and another, piloted by Mr J. T. Grant, of Dunedin, were performing turning manoeuvres about 500 ft above the airport when Mr Hanlon’s aircraft was seen to stall. It plunged nose first into the ground at an angle of about 65 degrees and immediatelv caught fire. Mr Hanlon’s badlv burned body was found alongside the aircraft under a piece of burn, ing wing. The Tiger Moth, which Mr Hanlon owned, was completely wrecked. Mr Hanlon was well known as an aerobatic flyer and balloonist. As well as the Tiger Moth, he had a high performance glider and a hot air balloon at the pageant.
