Pilot used to mountains
Mr Shand, the pilot of the aircraft, joined Royal Nepal Airlines late last year after flying for Lesotho Airways in Africa for two years and a half, and was no stranger to flying in mountainous areas.
Born in Christchurch and educated at Christ’s College, Mr Shand obtained his private pilot’s licence and then a commercial pilot’s licence soon after leaving school in 1966. He went to Lesotho four: years ago and flew mainly' Britten Norman Islanders fori Lesotho Airways. Most of his; flying was in rugged, moun-: tainous country in and out of high-altitude landing strips, I On several occasions he’ was a requested pilot for

Mr Shand was due to re-| dturn to Christchurch on leave' ’ in June to visit his family.
