Front men for TV1 news
(By K.
KEN COATES)
Television One. which tonight replaces N.Z.B.C. Television, has two new front men lined up for regional news bulletins and a new Sunday magazine programme. “Sunday's World." They are two Christchurch men. Warwick Burke and Frank Torley.
They will not work together. but will alternate with each other every seven days. Warwick Burke, aged 28, joined the N.Z.B.C. in 1967 in Greymouth and has had varied experience in radio in Christchurch as an announcer.
He spent eight months in, Britain, and worked for the 8.8. C. in radio and on his return to radio in Christchurch filled in as front man ion “The South Tonight" and announced the weather on TV. .: For the last four months I'he has been sports officer in ; Christchurch after Ron Find- : lav left for Wellington. Frank Torley’s experience is mainly as a rural broad- ; caster, and he also spent : three years as a feature writer for the agricultural : newspaper, “The New Zealand Farmer.” : He became rural broadcaster in Canterbury and the West Coast four years ago, : and contributed regularly to ' the radio programme, “Coun-j ■ try Session," and morel recently to television’s! (“Country Calendar.’’ : Frank Torley has also con-! tributed items with an agri-
cultural flavour to ‘'The e. South Tonight.” n Television One's editor, John Knowles, said last night i.jthat both men were- experi"lenced broadcasters who knew ji Christchurch well. Warwick I Burke had signed a contract .land Torlev would do so i shortly.
NOSTALGIA Last night’s final presentation of “The South Tonight” featured a nostalgic Rodney Bryant and Bryan Allpress, who will both be working for TV2 and who will not be seen by viewers until the second channel begins transmitting in July. If their expertise, as shown in flash-backs to some of their humorous items, is capitalised on by TV2, then the pair could become nationally popular. Television One’s first local programme tonight will include an introduction to the channel in Christchurch, what it hopes to do, and some of the people who will be involved.
