Target reached for cancer unit
The target of $22,500, set by a Christchurch man to buy a breast cancer detection unit for the Christchurch Women’s 1 iospital, has been reached.
Mr L. J. Rhodes, the organiser and founder of the appeal, said yesterday that although the j target had been reached. : the cost of buying and installing the unit may J have increased. The money was raised by a raffle that will be drawn on April 3, but further donations 1 would be accepted by the ' Bank of New Zealand or the 1 fund-raising committee. “I would like to reach :i $25,000. and I think we will. ;i because the response so far!; has been terrific,” said Mr Rhodes. , : He said he hoped the unit would be in Christchurch some time this year.
i “We have made the purI chase as urgent as the appeal for money.” said Mr Rhodes. The North Canterbury Hos. pital Board will buy the unit, after studying the four 1 varieties available. The money raised by the appeal committee will be presented [to the board early in May. “The hospital board maj well have to send someone overseas for further training, which will increase the cost of the unit,” said Mr Rhodes. Mr Rhodes appealed to anyone still holding raffle books to send them in as soon as possible. First prize in the raffle is worth $707, second $lB5, and third $l3O.
