Requiescat in pace is regarded as a mortal’s final reward: but there was a slight delay before achievement in Christchurch recently. Two men of the same surname died in hospital. One was a Roman Catholic, the other a Protestant. After the Rosary' had been said in a Roman Catholic church relatives wanted to have a last look at their father and uncle. When the coffin was opened there, clutching rosary beads and wearing a scapula, was a complete stranger. Morticians were mortified. the morgue was blamed; but before burial arrangements in one case, cremation in the other, had been completed both men were assured of their R.J.P.

The upset funeral directors, who have been in business for many years, knew of only three other mishaps with mistaken identity.
