Smoking in census?

A question on smoking habits might be included in the next census. The National Heart Foundation has asked the Statis-; tics Department to include the question and the department is considering it. The census can include one question on a medical subject, the last census having one deal- j ing with diabetes. Dr D. R. Hay, secretary of the Heart Foundation's scien- : tific committee, said yesterday that the foundation was; anxious to see a question on( smoking habits in the 1976 j census. “It w’ould not only provide' research value, but would; help us to pinpoint target! groups to w’hich health edu-' cation could be directed more strongly.” he said. The foundation also wanted the Health Department to provide more vigorous health education for key groups such as teachers, training college students, and dental nurses — those who helped with the development of children, he said. It was time that the department published tar and nicotine figures for various cigarettes so the public could get closer to safer smoking.said Dr Hay. 1
