Cream Puff’s quality might tell
(“The Press” Special Service)
AUCKLAND. In the form which got her a win over Blue Blood at Hawera last week-end and a close second to Princess Patrice in the New Zealand Oaks, Cream Puff would take the Rotorua Stakes, a 1900 m event for fillies and mares at Rotorua today. The race is designed to give Great Northern Oaks candidates a final race before the big event at Ellerslie on Saturday week. Cream Puff, from Wanganui, was let up after her hard encounter with Princess Patrice, and her Hawera outing was her second in a fresh campaign. To : beat the likes of Blue Blood, ! Count Kereru and Melody Belle over 1400 m was a good effort. It is reasonable to assume Cream Puff improved enough with her latest race to now find a longer journey to her liking. Bellota looks the best chance after Cream Puff. Her form lately has been patchy but there is no doubting her ability. Stevo, the speedy grey from Hastings, should carry on his winning way when he contests the second leg, the Agrodrome Handicap. On Ills last trip to Rotorua, in December, he won by six and a half lengths in Imin 10.2 sec for 1200 m. He won two more races, the latest on January 15. and this start will be his first since. Old Blue Nile almost invariably runs in his best style at Rotorua and he must be considered. A better prospect, though, might be Shot Thru, a winner on the course last spring. She is in good form again with two firsts and a close second at Avondale last week from her last three attempts.
