Press Assoeiciftoti) NEW PLYMOUTH
A doctor on the Tarankai Hospital Board. Mr A. D. Hodge, has criticised mothers who accompanied their young children in hospitals.
He was commenting at the board’s meeting in New Plymouth on a motion passed recently by the New Zealand Paediatric Society that the society affirms the principle of admission to hospital for mothers of children under. two years and a half so that 1 they can support their infants.
“Not all doctors are in favour of this and I’m one of them.” said Mr Hodge.
“Mothers present in wards ■with their children create a nuisance and disrupt ward routine, particularly when a i doctor wants to do’ bis ward rounds.” As soon as the mothers i left, the child screamed and performed, making it difficult i for the doctor to carry out • his examination.
; Children were taught to be ; ' totally dependent on their I | parents and reject all other ipeopie, he said.
: “I don’t think the board (should tumble over back1 wards. In my book they are lodd people who selfishly want (the children to themselves.” Mr Hodge said a child (would settle in well after (about half a day from his' parents.
