S. AFRICA’S IMMIGRANTS
Recruitment criticised
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON.
At least half of South Africa’s white immigrants come from Britain, according to a report, which adds that other Britons are going to Rhodesia in spite of the sanctions that prevent that country from advertising openly in the United Kingdom. The report, prepared by anti-apartheid groups in Britain and abroad, has been published to coincide with an Anti-Apartheid Movement meeting in London on United Nations action ! against white migration to ‘ South Africa. Recruiting activities by (the South African Government, and by individual firms in Britain, are extensive, the report says, adding that whereas 5 per cent of emigrating Britons went to the republic in 1964. the proportion had doubled by 1972. South Africa is second in popularity only to Australia among Britons going to Commonwealth or former Commonwealth countries, the study said. A foreword to the report describes the recruitment efforts as “a vicious practice,” and adds: “The repeated efforts of the white regimes to attract European ■ immigrants are a means of < preventing the African! labour force from occupying) qualified jobs.”
