Steps to halt drug flow

CANBERRA, March 28.
The Minister of Labour and Immigration (Mr Cameron) said yesterday that drug trafficking across the Tasman from New Zealand was serious. He said he had information on the trafficking which was confidential.
“It is quite serious and we are taking steps to deal with it,” said Mr Cameron.
He was commenting on an A.B.C. radio interview on the announcement that he and the New Zealand Minister for Immigration (Mr Colman) would recommend to their Governments that travellers across the Tasman should in future produce proof of identification. Mr Cameron said the present system allowed criminals and drug traffickers to travel freely from country to country. As a result of the talks between Mr Cameron and Mr Colman both Governments are expected to set up departmental committees to investigate tighter controls on travel between the two countries.
It was suggested that an identity card might have to be produced under the new system. The cards could include a metal strip which could be detected only by machine, a source said.
