English rider for Jandell
(N ZPA Staff Correspondent New Zealand horses look well placed to win two of the six big races at the Sydney Easter carnival. Mansingh appears to have only the filly Cap D’Antibes in his way to the $70,000 first prize available for three-year-olds; Apollo Eleven, Jandell, Kia Maia or perhaps Battle Heights could take out the $90,000 that goes to the Sydney Cup winner. New Zealand’s other starter is Pan Edition. Which seeks the $20,000 first prize in the big sprint, the Galaxy. There has been considerable interest in the action of Jandell’s trainer. Cliff Fenwick, in bringing out the English jockey, Geoff Lewis, to ride the mare in the cup. Fenwick told reporters yesterday that Jandell’s owner, Sir William Stevenson, wanted a jockev who had ridden the mare, and after Bob Skelton and Grenville Hughes said they were unavailable, he contacted Lewis, who rode Jandell at Avondale last month. Lewis is understood to have telephoned the Sydney jockey, Bill Camer, for a report on Jandell’s run last Saturday, and after a glowing report from Camer, he took the ride. Lewis is expected at Sydney on Saturday afternoon and it is likely he will have a gallop on Jandell on Sunday. The six big races at the Easter carnival are:— Doncaster Handicap (1600 m $lOl,OOO. on Saturday. Australasian Champion Stakes (2000 m $lOl,OOO. for three-year-olds, on Saturday.
