‘Deport troublemakers’
80’ (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 26. 95 80 The Crown prosecutor, Mr E. R. Winkel, today called for the deporta75 tion of all Polynesians 69 who committed acts of violence after coming to 64 New Zealand.
He told Mr Justice McMullin in the Supreme Court: “To these people deportation is the most effective deterrent, rather than fines or imprisonment.” The community must be protected from violent assault, which was becoming all to prevalent. Many assaults were committed by Polynesians coming to this country unaccustomed to ' New Zealand ways and
unable to take liquor, said Mr Winkel. His Honour said he could not make any order for deportation but he could recommend it. He sentenced Lui Luafalealo, aged 22. to six months gaol on a charge of assault with intent to Injure, and recommended Luafalealo’s deportation after the sentence had been served. If people came to this! country they must act like] New Zealanders, and Luafalealo had not, said his Honour. “I think that you and others like you who come here must know that you have got to obey our laws,” he said. “I am quite sure that in Samoa your chief would have been very angry and turned you over to the police. Luafalealo had been found guilty of assaulting John Tuala with intent to injure him at a Mangere church barbeque on January 2. After the two argued Luafalealo challenged Mr Tuala to a fight. He gashed Mr Tuala’s stomach with the broken neck of a wine bottle.
