Chinese medical men visit Chch

The first Chinese medical delegation to visit New Zealand arrived in Christchurch. yesterday on the last leg of a tour that could lead to increased exchanges of medical people between the two countries.

The group of six is here at the invitation of the Government.

Last September a New Zealand medical delegation led by the Director-General of Health (D. H. J. H. Hiddlestone) visited China. The Chinese group is led by Dr Tung Mien-kuo, Deputy Director of the Public Health Ministry’s Sciences and Education Department. The other members are Dr Cheng Lin-fan, of the Peking Medical Institute’s Stomatology Hospital, Dr Shih Changhsi, of the Chungching Stomatology Hospital, Dr Liu Chung-po, of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences’ Epidemic Prevention Research Institute, and Dr Chen Shao-hsien, of the Capital Hospital’s Basic Research Group Immunity Laboratory. With them is Interpreter Chang Hung, of the Public Health Ministry’s Department of Relations with Foreign Countries. j The delegation is accomi panied in New Zealand by Mr ID. B. Payton, of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and Dr W. J. S. Barnes, head of the Health Department’s International Health Centre in Wellington. Dr Barnes said last night he hoped the tour would lead to increased exchanges of Chinese and New Zealand medical personnel. Sources close to the delegation are confident of further exchanges, particularly involving people in more specialised fields. They say such exchanges would be of great mutual I benefit, giving each country

a chance to learn from the other. Today, the delegation is to visit the Christchurch Clinical School, the Dental Nurses’ Training School and the National Radiation Laboratory. On Saturday, team members are to visit Sunnyside Hospital and go on a sightseeing tour, and on Sunday they fly to Sydney on their way home.

The group has inspected medical facilities in Wellington, Rotorua, Hamilton, Auckland and Dunedin.
