Sale of coal to Japan
Sir, —The proposal to sell coal to Japan should be resisted by New Zealanders who have the future welfare of their country at heart. Last time coal was shipped to Japan it cost more than the price received to put it on board ship. Remember the Comalco deal. It is foolishness to rail coal to Lyttelton as it would cost millions for railway improvement and equipment made in
Japan. This deal will leave us with a hole in the ground and a mountain of debt (to Japan of course). If coal must go to Japan (which God forbid) it could be piped direct to ships as is done with our ironsands and at less cost, water power being readily available. Let us not get the dirty end of the stick in the “Greater East Asia Coprosperity Sphere.”—Yours, etc.,
D. McMAHON. March 2, 1975.
