Aust, sells beef

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, March 16.

Japan is expected to place an order for $750,000 of Australian beef within a few days, according to Australian Government sources. It will be the first Australian beef to go to Japan', since the end of May last year, when Japan put an official embargo on beef imports from Australia. The Australian Government regards the order, of about 2000 tonnes, as nominal. But it is seen as a crack in the rigid barrier Japan has maintained. The order comes after discussions over the week-end, at the instigation of the Prime Minister (Mr Whitlam) between the Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs (Mr Alan Renouf) and the Japanese Ambassador (Mr ’ Kenzo Yoshida).
