Procedure clear
Late last week the appointment was announced of Mr D. K. Mackenzie, of Ealing in Mid-Canterbury, to take the place of the late Mr T. P. Lowe, of Windermere, Mid-Canter-bury, as representative of the Ashburton district on the electoral committee of the Meat and Wool Boards for the remainder of the present term. The procedure for the filling of such vacancies, as caused by the death of Mr Lowe, who was chairman of the committee, is clearly laid down in the Meat Board Regulations, 1970, amendment 1. It states that where such a vacancy occurs within 10 weeks of the next meeting of the committee a replacement may be appointed by the Meat Board, after consulting with the Wool Board and with the chair-
man of the provincial meat and wool section of Federated Farmers in the electoral district concerned. If the period mentioned is longer than 10 weeks then a fresh election has to be held. In this case the Meat Board acted in accordance with the regulations in appointing Mr Mackenzie, who was recommended for appointment by the meat and wool section. It is understood that a nomination was also put forward by the Sheep and Cattlemen’s Association but there is no provision for consideration of this under the regulations. Between the meeting of the electoral committee this month and the next meeting in August all elected members of the committee come up for election again.
