SLOW PLAY

The New Zealand Cricket Council would have to look closely at the question of slow play, said the chairman of its board of control (Mr W. A. Hadlee) last evening-. Mr Hadlee said he was concerned about the slow play of the M.C.C. team, which ended its short tour of New Zealand last week-end, but it would not be easy to overcome the problem. Asked if he thought a minimum hourly over rate I should be introduced into i test cricket, as in English | county cricket, he said this

might be “one of a number of considerations” to curb slow play. Any final decision would have to be made by the international body. Mr Hadlee said he would not like to comment on a suggestion that the English players were not interested in the Christchurch test because their rest day had been cancelled and they had jetboat trips and other outings arranged. “You don’t know what is in the minds of these people, you can just make assumptions. They did have outings cancelled when the cricket was on. Whether the slow play was deliberate or not, I 'don’t know.”
