' No two-port surcharge’
Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 12. Overseas shipping lines would not impose a special South Island containerhandling surcharge because of additional costs involved in a twin-port complex, said the Minister of Transport (Sir Basil Arthur) today. Initially the lines had said such a scheme would mean additional costs of sBm. “but we have already demolished that," Sir Basil said after a meeting with shipowners’ representatives.
“They have agreed that these extra costs cannot be I sustained,” Sir Basil added. Additional costs were likely to be less than half of the original suggestion. The lines would hold further talks with the Ministry’s economists on[ this point. Shipowners had always favoured Port Chalmers for the sole South Island container port, but they would accept the situation if the Ports Authority recommendation for designating Lyttelton a container port as well were agreed to. said Sir Basil. He is the appeal authority for the Ports Authority recommendation for two South Island container ports. He said the meeting was a “very informative working session.”
Sir Basil hopes to make a recommendation to the Cabinet on the container ports by the end of the month.
