Totara Maid wins

Riccarton stables put four of the five runners into the field for the Ashburton County Handicap yesterday, and the three top fancies were amongst them. But the winner, and an easy one, was the West Coast-owned, Washdyke-trained Totara Maid, a grand battler for the Maurice Jones stable.

Totara Maid did not manage to improve her tidy record at the Cromwell meeting beforehand, and was the outsider but

one yesterday. However, she was clearly best able to meet the demands of a middle distance on a softening track, coming from last to win running away by three lengths from Beau Trie, which had tried for an all-the-way win. Kai Tak, the favourite, was a battling third, unable to make any progress from the home turn. Audaciter dropped away to a distant fourth after contending for the early lead.
