Union ballot promised

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, March 11. A ballot on compulsory unionism promised by the National Party if elected to government might be held over three years, the National Party spokesman on labour, Mr J. B. Gordon (Clutha), said today.

Speaking to the Retailers’ Federation, Mr Gordon said he could not give any details of National’s proposed industrial relations policy, as the details had not yet been approved by the candidates, or by the party’s policy committee. But the poll on voluntary unionism would be • held. For “simple technical reajsons” the ballot would be I held over a period, possibly

as long as three years,” he said. The ballot would be “truly democratic and properly supervised," Mr Gordon said. “We are quite satisfied that the people of New Zealand want to see such a ballot.” Mr Gordon said the National Party’s dossier of allegations of union malpractice was still growing. The evidence was substantial, even though it involved only a very small percentage 'of the 309 unions, he said.
