Old Post Office not wanted

A suggestion by the Canterbury regional committee of the Historic Places Trust that the Lyttelton Post Office be retained when a new one was built was received with little enthusiasm by the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. The confmittee wrote to the council suggesting that not only individual buildings should be preserved but also the “character of the older part of the town.” Among a number of buildings suggested as worthy of preserving were the Time Ball Station and the Post Office.

; “The object of this council is to remove the Post Office in due course. It’s as simple as that,” said the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett). He said the Time Ball Station was already officially listed as an historic place.

The letter was referred to the town planning and works committees.
