Subsidised farming ‘inevitable'

Is . subsidised fanning here to stay? Some people evidently believe it is. At the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s jubilee show on Saturday, the member of Parliament for the district (Mr R. L. G. Talbot) said that farming was at the crossroads. In two years, he said, costs had risen 30 to 40 per cent, but returns had stayed the same. If farming were to develop, it would need huge injections of taxpayers’ money. This would have to be accepted, and it would require a big publicrelations effort to “put it across” to the man in the street.
