Losses from strikes 'just a microdot ’

(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, March 11. The number of manhours lost through industrial stoppages was only a microdot percentage of man-hours lost through other causes, the Minister of Labour (Mr Faulkner) said in Rotorua today. Speaking at a conference of the North Island Electrical Workers’ Union, Mr Faulkner said more manhours were lost through accidents and absenteeism. “But it is this microdot which is headlined in the press,” the Minister said.

He said that in the last five months 3160 manhours had been lost through industrial stoppages out of a potential 25 million. The Minister compared these figures with the loss through accident of 300,000 man-hours in a month and, on a “reliable estimate,” the loss of 5 per cent of man-hours through absenteeism. This was the equivalent of a million man-hours a month. “The microdot percentage hits the headlines, but there is little seen of the accident rate or absenteeism,” he said.
