Banking issues in demand in Aust.
Good demand for banking stocks highlighted a firm trading session on Australian exchanges yesterday. Bank of N.S.W. and the A.N.Z. were the best improvers, rising 10c to i 630 c and 20c to 580 c.
Other banking issues to] I rise included the C.B.A. and : ißank Adelaide, the latter on! I news that it was also reduc-j ing its interest rates. I Although the rest of the' ! market moved up turnovers | ! were again at a low level! ! with movements mostly! ; marginal. ! B.H.P. gained to 642ci ' while C.S.R., which j escaped Monday’s profit-tak-:ing, closed 16c lower at! 1420 c. In a firm property section,] : Hooker and Jennings shares! moved ahead, but Stocks! ! and Holdings failed to trade, despite its higher December earnings. Mining issues were mainly ! firmer with good rises going ito W.M.C., Cons Gold, A.M.. and S„ and B.H. South. Golds issues however, lost money after the price fall in ■ London.
