Clubs criticised

The apathetic altitude of some clubs in not taking their opportunities to nominate Plunket Shield selectors was mentioned by Mr G. T. Dowling at the Canterbury Cricket Association's management committee meeting last evening.

“We seek nominations in April, but only three or maybe four clubs last year bothered to forward nominations. I am not getting at the present Plunket Shield or Brabin Cup selectors, but this is an important matter which should receive a proper airing at club level.” said Mr Dowling.

“Perhaps clubs should be requested to put forward nominations,” he added. “Should we have the power to make nominations mandatory?” asked the chairman. Mr I. P. Anderson

“I’m sure most clubs are concerned and most discuss it,” said Mr L. J. Knowles. “To make it mandatory is a bit autocraticin parliamentary terms you have to enrol but you don’t have to vote,” he said

The secretary (Mr D. G. Harrison) said that clubs had already received three circulars on the matter. On the suggestion of Mr Anderson it was decided to send a fourth circular asking for nominations or for the paper at least to be returned. The Canterbury association accepted an invitation to hold the Australasian secondary schoolboys state tournament in Christchurch in the 1377-78 season. It will become p matter for the Canterbury boys’ association. INDOOR PITCH The New Zealand World Cup team will hold a pre-tour gathering in Christchurch under the national coach (Mr M. J. Horton) from April 25 to 27. The Hagley Indoor pitch has been booked, and the possibility of attaining an outdoor pitch will be investigated.

A suggestion that the C.C.A. purchase a videotape unit to assist in coaching was favourably received by members. An approach will be made for financial assistance to the Ministry of Sport and Recreation.
