Seamen’s pay

Sir, — Our local seamen’s union are concerned about the lay-off of seamen with the prospect of being paid for their worth, i.e. unemployment wage, in lieu of their present exorbitant pay. Crocodile tears to them and sooner or later they will begin to realise that they will “kill the goose that lays the golden egg.” This nation is fed up with the petulance, arrogance and greed of these seamen who have turned the Tasman into the most expensive sea. route in the world. Your correspondent, J. Hobson, claims that seamen make great sacrifices by being away at sea and their families for months. My answer then is for them to stand aside and let genuine workers share in these high salaries with a view to increasing our national output instead of doing everything to thwart it. — Yours etc., FLYING GOOSE.
