HUGE LOGS GO TO CHIPPER
(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, March 7. Truckloads of West Coast beech logs are rolling north to Nelson for chipping and export to Japan for paper pulp. The giant logging trucks begin their journey to Nelson from beech forests near Reeftoh where trials have begun to help the Forest Service evaluate tenders for the huge project. A Forest Service spokesman said today that sawn logs were sold in
Reef ton, and the balance trucked to Nelson and chipped under contract. “At present this is the only outlet for disposing of the non-saw logs. That situation could well change if a particle-board factory were established locally.” In spite of the size of some of the logs, they represent no problem — they are cut into quarters to fit the chipper. One truckload of four huge logs takes only about four minutes to chip.
