Woodward Cup golf tomorrow

Christchurch and Russley will again be the leading contenders for the Woodward Cup inter-club golf competition beginning at Shirley tomorrow.

It is not known yet exactly which of the named players in each club will be turning cat for the two rounds tomorrow, but the match committee has seeded Christchurch first — ahead of Russley — on an aggregate handicap basis.

Last year Christchurch finally ended Russley’s. nine-year reign as inter-club golf champion, although it was not until the final round — when it beat Russley 5-3 — that the result was decided.

Both clubs have again nominated strong teams. Geoff Saunders, the 1974 Canterbury stroke-play champion, and another Freyberg Rose Bowl player, Joe Whitaker, are among the players Christchurch will field during the competition.

Russley’s' line-up will include the provincial strokeplav champion, Bruce Taylor, and the match-play champion, Gary Urlwin.

The two top teams should fave little difficulty in winning both their matches iomorrow. Christchurch plays Rangiora and Avondale while Russley plays Coringa and Templeton. Tomorrow’s draw is: Horning: Christchurch v. Rangiora. Avondale v. Waiti-I tiri. Harewood v. Coringa,'
