Avon Song taken to win Hororata Cup

Avon Song, from Washdyke, will he a popular fancy in the Ilororata Cup tomorrow. Ihis could he the last I lororata Cup run on the course as the New Zealand Racing Authority has recommended that no further totalisator meetings be held on the course after the end of the current season.

With strong protests and! requests for a reversal of the| decision being made by the! club, officials think that their] cause is fat from being lost.’; However, the fact that most] consider the decision a bind-; ing one. will probably result] in a crowd of record propor-| tions and their support for] Avon Song will probably re-1 suit in her starting favourite] for the Hororata Cup She resumed racing a fortnight ago on her home track]and was not disgraced when! third to Mighty Gay and Armbro Song al the end of a solidly-run 3200 m. She had missed quite a bit of work because of injuries received in a race fall at her previous start. The run at Washdyke is certain to have improved her and she is expected to master the distance of this race more competently than most of her rivals. - STAYS WELL Combine, the winner of the Marlborough Cup three starts back and the Reefion Cup not long before that, failed from a back mark at Ashburton at his most recent appearance. He stays well and should make a race of it with Avon Song. Royal George, a surprise winner at Addington on .January 11, confirmed that run when fourth, from 20m, behind Select Circle at the end of 2400 m at Ashburton fourl days later. He is not very big,l but is as game as they corncj and he should be capable of I a bold run. The Westport trainer. KeithPowel. has a splendid record: in country cups. He will be represented by Heather I.ane! and last year's winner of this] race, Noble Charles, both of] which are capable of getting! into the finish. Another trainer with two runners is Pat O’Reilly, who] will be represented by l.advi Hodgen and Just-a-Glow. The} last-named will start from! 20m, but that is unlikely to be enough to keep her out of the finish.
