ROUGH SWIM

(N Z Press Association) ROTORUA, March 6

A middle-aged woman has survived a turbulent trip down the Huka Falls. The Taupo police have withheld her name.

A police spokesman said he believed the woman was the first person to survive a journey down the rapids and over the 35fthigh falls. A man standing on the footbridge above the falls yesterday saw the woman in the water and watched her emerge from the bubbling water at the foot of the falls. She swam to the bank after surfacing. A teacher with a group of Masterton schoolchildren helped her from the water.

The Taupo fire brigade, St John ambulance and the police were at the scene but their help was not needed.
