Tame draw in women’s cricket
(Neto Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON
The Australia-Wellington women’s twoday cricket match petered out to a tame draw at the Hutt Recreation Ground yesterday in spite of sporting declarations by both sides.
With three hours of play lost to rain during the two days the draw was a foregone conclusion. Wellington wickets fell cheaply in the morning session after Australia had de-
dared its first innings closed at the overnight total of 155 for seven. The Victorian fast bowler, Sharon Tredrea did the early damage. Any Wellington hopes of a quick breakthrough in the Australian second innings were dashed by the complete mastery of the tourists openers, Jackie Potter and Bev Wilson.
Neither looked in any trouble against the Wellington medium-pace attack until Wilson was given out l.b.w. to Jill Saulbrey on the last ball before tea with the total at 63. Then at 68 for three Australia looked in danger of a collapse, but Lynn Denholm and Lorraine Hill steered them cut of trouble.
Wellington was left with under an hour to make 175 runs and at the close was 47 for two. Scores.—Wellington 96/6 dec., and 47/2; Australia 155/7 and 115/3 dec.
