Golden rain tree
This species, Koelreuteria paniculata, is more commonly known as Golden rain tree, Pride of India, or China tree. This ven’ hard deciduous tree is a native of northern China and forms a very good shade or specimen subject. It grows to between six and nine metres. The double pinrate leaves of Koelreuteria are light green in spring and change to a bright yellow during autumn. The flowers appear in late spring or early summer in large panicles and are yellow in colour.
As the blossoms fade they are replaced by very conspicuous, large inflated capsules, each containing three seeds. Coid winters usually help to give a better autumn colour to both foliage and seed capsules. The tree tolerates hot, dry summers and cold winters but will grow best in a sunny position. It will grow in most soils providing the drainage is good. The tree does not usually have to be pruned and will propagate from seeds or root cuttings.
