Technical education “in the balance”
Until the problem of standard tertiary student bursary was solved by the Government, the future of technical education in New Zealand was in the balance, said the president of the Technical Institute Students’ Association (Mr K. Newlands) in Christchurch yesterday.
“The endless procrastination by the Minister of Education (Mr Amos) about payment of a living allowance to full-time technical- institute students has caused us to lose all confidence in him,” said Mr Newlands. “We are disillusioned, too, by his masterly inactivity on a number of other issues, such as the promised student-
“We know that the public are aware of the plight of our students, many of whom must live off their parents,” Mr Newlands said. “We know, too, that many Government members are aware of the situation, but apparently Mr Amos is unaware of what we are having to put up with.”
Many technical institute students were having to exist on a bursary of $BO a year for full-time courses which cost students more than $lOOO a year. “No-one is asking for cheap hand-outs but we do want to see the Government live up to its election pledge to introduce the standard tertiary bursary,” Mr Newlands said. Unless a fair system of bursary assistance "was provided, there was little hope that more full-time students would attend New Zealand’s 12 technical institutes. ( “It has been the avowed Government policy to support technical education. We hope that real action on bursaries will make this a fact.”
