Art galleries
Sir, —I read the article by G. T. Moffit in this morning’s paper with dismay. It read as if the gallery at Akaroa was the only one on the Peninsula. For two years and a half we have been promoting art in this area; we have 49 artists exhibiting and 200 paintings, three on exhibition in Moscow, and an exhibition going to Australia this year. We have sent local pictures all over the world.—Yours, etc., E. AND J. CHARLES, Corsair Gallery, Ltd, Lyttelton. February 26, 1975. [Mr Moffit replies: “I have no doubt that the Corsair Gallery, Ltd, is providing a useful service. My point about the Bosshard Gallery is that, even though it is situated in Akaroa, it has been able successfully to promote, to a largely Christchurch audience, the work of a significant number of outstanding New Zealand artists including Phillip Trusttum, Ralph Hotere, Barry Cleavin, Leo Bensemann, Tony Fomison, Quentin Macfarlane, Rosemary Campbell and David Cheer. All these are represented in the Robert .McDougall Art Gallery collection of New Zealand, painting and in many other public and important private collections.”]
