Automatic Hondas
Engineers at the Japanese Honda factory have been experimenting with automatic transmission and are expected to market a machine fitted with this inside a year. Several types of automatic transmission are under development, including a semiautomatic system with a gear-change pedal for a two or three-speed gearbox.
The system most likely to be introduced into the factory’s big machine range is likely to have a torque converter with a multi-speed gearbox.
Various kinds of engine lubrication in combination with the transmission systems have also been tried, including wet and dry sump layouts. The performance of the C 8750 roadster, equipped with automatic transmission, is reported to be much the same as the standard model, with a standing start quarter mile in Msec. Other changes expected on the first automatic Honda are a four-into-one exhaust system and a lower subframe.
