“This is your fourth offence involving drinking and driving and I would be failing in my duty if I did not impose a sentence of imprisonment.” said Mr F. G. Paterson, S.M. in the Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Murfitt), was put on probation for 18 months and ordered to do 200 hours of community work when he appeared for sentence on two charges of burglary, two of false pretence, and two of forging cheques. He had previously pleaded guilty. The Magistrate also ordered Beaven to place his finances under the control of the probation officer and pay $207 compensation. Part of that amount would be reduced if any of the property was recovered from the burglaries. Mr Murfitt said that the only thing he had to add to the probation officer's report was that' at the time of the offences Bea-1 ven was “dabbling in hard l drugs.” The Magistrate said that the defendant might have been sent, back to Borstal. However, the* offences seemed to be “rather: a laose than a return to offending.” He also took into account the good report on the defendant when he left Borstal, said the Magistrate. DANGEROUS SPEED A driver, who passed a line of vehicles at 80 miles an hour in a 30 miles an hour zone and then crashed into a pole, writing off his car, was fined $lOO and his driver’s licence was cancelled for six months on a charge of driving at a speed which might have been dangerous. He is David John Harvey, aged 24. a mechanic, who pleaded guilty. Sergeant Prouting said that about 8.20 p.m. on November 30 Harvey was driving on the Main South Road from Sockburn

towards Church Corner when he overtook a line of vehicles at 80 miles an hour. A car travelling in the opposite direction was forced off the road. On the bend by Curletts Road, Harvey’s vehicle got out of control,’ istruck a pole and was wrecked.! EIGHT CHARGES Brian Desmond Marsh. aged 21 (Mr K. J. Osborn), was remanded on bail to March 5 for sentence on three charges of ; burglary and five of presenting a cheque with intent to defraud He pleaded guilty Sergeant R. H. Prouting said that on January 31 Marsh burgled a house in Queen Street. Rangiora. and took a wallet, some Fijian money and a cheque book, all valued at $l5. That, afternoon he cashed one of the cheques for $5.79 to-buy petrol. He then travelled to Pieton and cashed another cheque for $7.75 at a hotel. On the return journey a cheque was used to buy trousers from a Blenheim store. On February 7 Marsh kicked |in the rear door of a house at I Fernside. He was looking for leash hot did not take anything i from the house. i The third burglary was done at Wardrops Fibrous Plasters. 32 Moorhouse Avenue on February 11. He stole four cheoues after climbing through a window and kicking down an inside door. Two of the cheques were cashed at Rangiora th<> following day for $7.83 and $23.42. ROBBERY CHARGE Mark Junior Hiroki, aged 19. and Manga Joseph Hohepa, aged 2ft were remanded in custody to March 6 on a charge of robbing a taxi-driver in Rfcearton on February 18. No plea was entered. The date for the taking of depositions on the charge Isj April 16. RECEIVING Alan Roy Earle was convicted; on his plea of guilty on a charge* of receiving a radio cassette worth $lOO. and was remanded' on bail to March 5 for sentence. Sergeant D. B. Kerr said that the cassette was taken in a burglary of a house in Brittan Street. Earle was given it and la+er sold it to a dealer for $5O He kept Half the money and gave the other half to the no-son who gave him the eas- ' DRIVING OFFENCES Michael Charles Graham was sentenced to six months periodic detention and put on probation for 18 months on charges of driving while disqualified and unlawfullv taking a truck on January 21. Graham, aged 26 (Mr R. G. Mills), had previously pleaded guilty. The Court had been told that Graham drove a truck from the Caledonian Hotel car park and was caught bv the tnmk's driver at Bealey Avenue. The driver had been in the hotel bar when he saw his truck go past.

P F. Thompson), who pleaded not guilty to one charge of theft * and guilty to another. The Magistrate refused an application for the suppression of the defendant’s name. Sergeant A. H. Huckstep said that on November 6 the defendant took the shoulder bag from inside the door of a mobile caravan parked near the beach. Evidence was given that on November 13 the defendant also took $3 from a wallet while its owner was swimming. The Magistrate said that they were two particularly mean types of theft, “People should be able to go to the beach without having to worry about their property being tampered with.” he said. WHIP USED Colin James O’Leary, aged 17, a council worker, was put on probation- for 12 months with the ' condition that he do 24 hours of community work, on a charge of disorderly behaviour. Sergeant Prouting said that on November 11 the defendant was with a groitn of youths who were nlaytag with a stock whip in Cathedral Square. When questioned by the police he said that he had aimed the whip at the wall of the post office and at paper cups. BURGLED GOLF CLUB On a charge of burgling the Mangakino Golf Club, .Gavin John Tuira, aged 21. was convicted and remanded on bail to March 5 for sentence. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant Prouting said that on the night of September 17 the club house was broken into and liquor, cash and cigarettes worth $lBB taken.
