Bold move

In making its former town site available to the citizens of Christchurch the University of Canterbury has taken a step which is without precedence in New Zealand. For the next two years the 5 J acre site will be the temjjorary home of part of the Christchurch Technical Institute but more than 40 cultural groups under the guidance of the Arts Centre of Christchurch will also have use of some of the former university buildings.

The idea of retaining the buildings for the use of all Christchurch citizens was largely that of the vice-chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips) who spent many hours of negotiations with the Government and local authorities before the proposal was finally announced by the late Prime Minister (Mr Norman Kirk) at the time of the university’s centennial in 1973.

These new buildings which will be administered by the Trust will be designed to blend with the former university blocks and will provide offices for professional firms, town houses, a tavern, shopping centre and a new “home” for the Christchurch Aged Peoples’ Welfare Council.
