Rowing makes blunder

Rowing officials caught another crab this week when a misleading radio commercial was broadcast publicising the national championships at Lake Waihola. An extremely contentious issue — which centre should host the national rowing squad — was again raised. The commercial referred correctly to New Zealand rowing trials being held at Wanganui soon, but wrongly stated that the national squad would train there. Particularly embarrassed by the commercial, which was withdrawn on Tuesday, was the president of the New Zealand Rowing Association (Mr D. D. Rowlands). He is a member of the firm which paid for the commercial, and some people might infer from it that he supports Wanganui as the next training venue. For several years, the squad has trained under Mr R. Robertson, the national coach, at Kerr’s Reach, and no decision has been made for a change, according to Mr Rowlands. This choice of venue has met much opposition recently, especially now that Kerr’s Reach has been experiencing considerable erosion problems.
