Start soon on new spinal unit

Building of the spinal injuries unit at Burwood Hospital should begin early next year, the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s works committee (Mr W. L. F. Utley) said yesterday.

He said that progress with the plans was satisfactory. Permission had been received from Wellington to proceed with detailed planning, and this should be completed by August. Preliminary plans for the Lyttelton Health Centre had been sent to Wellington for approval, said the board chairman (Mr T. C. Grigg). He said some of the board’s officers had looked at the Mosgiel Health Centre, which was working very ■ I well. jSt John of God Hospital in negotiations under way with the Mary Potter Hospital for the use of beds under contract. St John of God had facilities for long-term severely disabled patients that were not being fully used, said Mr Utley. The board formed a policy committee “to undertake the continuing review of board policy objectives under the direction of the board and to make recommendations of its own initiative.” Elected to the committee; were Messrs Grigg, Whitty.i :Utley, H.
