More Chileans coming
A further 20 Chilean families are expected to arrive in New Zealand towards the end of March and the beginning of April. The group, of about 70, would leave as soon as application procedures had been carried out in Lima, Peru, said the adviser for the refugees (Dr K. Clements) yesterday.
The Chileans will settle in Auckland, possibly in hostels for the first few weeks. Employment will be arranged for them later. Of the Chilean families already in New Zeai land, most have settled in I Christchurch, with a few in i Wellington. The present group will • come to New Zealand in the general care of the National Council of Churches. This I would be the second quota of 20 families the council had brought in, said the resettlement officer for the organisation (Miss B. E. Smith) yesterday. Others had come to New Zealand independently. The group had little knowledge of English, Miss Smith said, although it was often found that one or two could speak it quite well. The group would take part in an English and orientation course after arrival.
Although this is expected to be the last quota of Chilean refugees, Dr Clements said that the matter would still be open for renegotiation if the need arose.
Cricket.—The third, and final cricket test between the Australian and the Indian women’s teams ended in a draw at Calcutta; the first two tests were also drawn. Scores: Australia 301/5 decl. and 72/3 deci., India 176 and 186/5.
