(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
PHNOM PENH, February 7 26. Student violence against Chinese shopkeepers broke out in Phnom Penh today as at the same time more insurgent rockets hit the Cambodian capital killing one person and wounding about five.
Disorganised groups of students roamed the streets beating up the Chinese shopkeepers, who closed down for the day. At least 90 per cent of the Chinese shops in the city were closed.
Today’s violence came after mob attacks oyer the week-end in Battamband city, south-west of Phnom Penh, where about 60 per
cent of Chinese owned shops were reported to have been wrecked.
The crowds in Battambang, Cambodia’s second largest city, were venting their protests against rising living costs on the Chinese traders, who own most of the country’s business.
