Visitor impressed by friendliness
After 24 hours in Christchurch, an American tourist, Mr T. Cowot, has found something he has not found in any other place he has visited — friendliness and happiness.
Kir Cowot, a former Vietnam navy driver and teacher of emotionally handicapped children, arrived in Christchurch with seven cents in his pocket. His money had been left in a bank in Hawaii.
The City Mission provided him with a meal, organised board, and lent him money. Strangers have helped him find his way about the city. Mr Cowot said he could not get over the fact that everylone wanted to go out of
their way to help — something not found in the United States, Korea, Japan, the Philippines or any other place he had visited.
He was also impressed at the clean streets, and healthy, happy people. “They are just ordinary, common people who don’t have- to impress anyone,” he said. Mr Cowot, who comes from Miami, Florida, hopes to hitch-hike around the South Island and to visit Auckland.
