Record attempt foiled by wind
* (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Wellington’s weather foiled champion pacer Young Quinn in his bid to lower Cardigan Bay’s Australasian mile time of Imin 56.25ec at Hutt Park Raceway last night. Strong wind and rain got the better of the InterDominion winner and although he had been right on target, in the final 300 m he faded. He ran the distance in 1:59.
Wind and rain, which had kept away from Wellington,
settled in early last night and it never really lifted. The wind was in Young Quinn’s face as he paced down the front straight and it was this more than any-
thing else that got to him at the finish. “The track was fine,” driver John Langdon said. "It was just the wind.” “He really had no right to break two minutes under the conditions,” his trainer, Charlie Hunter, said. The crowd was right with Young Quinn in his attempt. He went through the first furlong in 13.5 sec and the first quarter in 27.5. The third furlong was reached in 42.5 and the half went by in 58. When he went past the three-quarter strongly in 1:27 hopes started to rise, but Young Quinn was battling over the final stages. Young Quinn now returns Co Cambridge and will spend a few days at home before the camp flies to Sydney, tomorrow week for the Miracle Mile.
